Ok, I had to tell you guys about this show because this will not be a disappointment. As part of a grant, there is going to be an awesome show at RedHouse at the end of October that should not be missed. We have had Chris Corsano here a couple of times, and his duo with Michael Flower is one of my personal favorites. So here is the skinny, and really try to make it out to this one:

Ashtray Navigations
Flower-Corsano Duo
Thursday, October 29
9PM
$15 General Admission
$12 Students and Seniors

Red House welcomes Psychedelic Noise Project from UK!

Red House Arts Center has become a standout venue in Central New York for experimentalmusicians, hosting Alva Noto & Byetone from Germany, mudboy from Providence, and Zach Layton,MV Carbon and The Loud Objects from New York City. This trend continues when Red Housewelcomes Ashtray Navigations and the Flower-Corsano Duo from the Termite Club in the United Kingdom.

Phil Todd, inspired by the UK’s underground tape music scene, formed Ashtray Navigations in 1994 in Stoke On Trent, England. The psychedelic noise project defies easy categorization given the diverse nature of Todd’s collaborators and the incredible breadth of work Ash Nav has created. Ash Nav consists of Phil Todd (guitar/electronics) and Melanie Delaney, aka Ocelocelot (electronics).

"No matter how limited or impossible to find, every release by this one-man-plus sideshow proves to be a stimulating slice of homemade musical nirvana." – Foxy Digitalis

Michael Flower (shahi baaja, a modified electric version of the Indian bulbul tarang) has been involved in a number of solo projects and is best know for his work with Vibracathedral Orchestra.
Chris Corsano plays drums and has performed with Paul Flaherty, Jim O'Rourke, Björk, EvanParker, Jandek, Thurston Moore, Vampire Belt and Six Organs of Admittance among others.

"In compositional breadth, in technical twinkle, in (a)tonal assault, this is a deeply humbling record, the inscrutable blueprint for progress." – Tiny Mix Tapes on The Four Aims

Ashtray Navigations and the Flower-Corsano Duo will perform at the Red House Arts Center on Thursday, October 29 at 9PM. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for students and seniors and are available from www.theredhouse.org. For more information please contact Mike Intaglietta at 315-425-0405 or email press@theredhouse.org.

This tour of the Termite Club is made possible by a grant from Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program.

Yes, as Mike P told us before, this has been the summer of
cancellations.

Here is a message I got from Duane regarding the slated Sept. 11th
show which is now not happening:

"I had a big show at MoMA's PS1 get rained out (on Aug 29) and
rescheduled for Sept 12, and I have to be there early for sound-
check. And reason I have to cancel Syracuse is because this PS1 show
is a year in "the making" and I have to hold up my contract (contracts
are weird).

I write you now because I just got a google alert regarding posting
you just put on your blog....but I also noticed you mentioned to peeps
that driving to Ithaca might be something they are interested in.....I
am still playing Ithaca, and leaving to go back to NYC the next
morning."

SO BY ALL MEANS, GO TO THE ITHACA SHOW AND CATCH THIS AMAZING LINE-UP
((sorry about all of the cancellations this summer, sometimes it works
out, and sometimes it doesn't. I apologize for anyone who didn't get
the info in time, and hope you still trust us that shows will still be
happening))

SO HERE IS THE ITHACA SHOW INFO AGAIN:

Mountains >> http://www.myspace.com/apestaartjemountains
Duane Pitre >> http://www.myspace.com/duanepitre
Desolation Wilderness >> http://www.myspace.com/desolationwilderness
Tzar >> http://www.myspace.com/tzarduo
Keir Neuringer's Other People >> http://www.myspace.com/kneuringer

7:30PM doors / 8PM prompt start
3rd Floor Concert Hall, CSMA
330 E. State St., Ithaca, NY
ALL AGES / $10 / $8 with student I.D.

MOUNTAINS>>> A love of sculpting sound in front of an audience is at the heart of Mountains, otherwise known as Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp. Mountains is often compared to artists such as Brian Eno and Fennesz, citing their extended melodies and their unique broad guitar work. Mountains seamlessly blend pastoral electronic sounds with both field recordings and a plethora of acoustic instruments. The effect is incredibly sublime and hypnotic as the sounds slowly wrap themselves around each other and alter themselves in the mind of the listener.

The group’s third album, Choral, is a uniquely soothing and addicting listening experience and an aural crazy quilt: warm and inviting with many details to discover and explore. Guiding us through sonic peaks and valleys, the band takes us on a journey through their realm of experimentation, occasionally crossing over into psychedelic and kosmiche (Harmonia, Cluster, Popol Vuh) territory.

DUANE PITRE>>> Brooklyn-based, avant-garde composer and performer. Thursday's performance will feature a rare solo appearance from this composer — who used to skateboard professionally for Alien Workshop — who typically collaborates in large ensemble formats. His current works explore both chaos and discipline, and the relationship that exists between the two. Pitre primarily works with long-tones and utilizes alternate tuning schemes that focus on microtonality, enabling him to explore unaccustomed harmonic intervallic relationships.

Pitre has presented his works in NYC at such spaces as Roulette, The Stone, and ISSUE Project Room (where he was the Spring 2009 Artist in Residence). He has shared bills with artists such as Marc Ribot, Tony Conrad, Audrey Chen, Sean Meehan, and James Blackshaw. Pitre has releases on Important Records, Trome Records, Quiet Design, NNA, etc. He's appeared on compilations with artists such as Keith Rowe, Sir Richard Bishop, Tetuzi Akiyama, and Jandek; and he has appeared on soundtracks with Dinosaur Jr., J Mascis, and Animal Collective.

DESOLATION WILDERNESS>>> K Records, West Coast band. They left the parking lots and the malls, the high schools and the valleys, and found their home at the summer night overlook. Taking the sounds of the cities below and amplifying them into a pitched resonance, they write slow burners and warped guitar/synthesizer/vibraphone ballads influenced by drone music, the photorealistic art of Robert Bechtle, and musique concrète; with a pulse included.

"By stripping electronic dream-pop to its core and rebuilding it with lo-fi guitars, drums, bass, and vintage keyboards, Olympia, WA's Desolation Wilderness have tapped into a new sound — one that's truly transcendent." —SPIN Magazine

TZAR>>> Tzar consists of two of exceptional instrumentalists, drummer/bass pedalist Willie B, and organist Michael Stark, who have played together for 10 years now. They have been the preferred rhythm section for such artists as Johnny Dowd, Sally Timms, Jsan & the Analogue Sons, and Hank Roberts. From Thelonious Monk to ZZ Top, their influences are vast and their sound individual.

Willie B has performed and recorded with many artists such as Jamie Lidell, Warren Zanes (Del Fuegos), NYC punk legend Jayne County, Hellwood, and Neko Case. From punk to jazz to country, Willie's versatility is his strength. He is best known for incorporating organ bass pedals into his drum setup, allowing him to play bass and drums simultaneously. This original sound has become his signature. Born in Queens, NY, Michael Stark has been writing for and performing with experimental trio Wingnut as well as Tzar. Both have toured extensively in Europe and the U.S. with artists such as rock legend Johnny Dowd.

KEIR NEURINGER'S OTHER PEOPLE>> Born in New York in 1976, Keir Neuringer is a composer and performer (saxophone, voice, electronics). His output ranges from pulse-based electronic music, through free jazz and experimental electroacoustic improvisation, to music for theater and notated compositions for contemporary chamber ensembles. Keir Neuringer collaborates with a wide and undefined network of musicians, including Rafal Mazur, Ensemble Klang, Joel Ryan, DJ Sniff, Carlos Iturralde and Matt Bauder. He has performed and exhibited works in the US, Mexico, Israel, Turkey, South Africa and throughout Europe.

Keir Neuringer's Other People features an all-star line-up of top Ithaca talent performing Keir's material of the last decade. Conceived for people who can bring energy, personality and soul to outsider music that blends structure and improvisation without losing the beat, there's no fast answer to the genre question (though nods and winks are sent in the direction of the Decoding Society, Zappa, Tortoise and Threadgill). This music makes its own rules and then breaks them into pieces.

Thank you to EVERYONE who came out to the Halvorson/Pavone show on Saturday! It was a beautiful night, and it was nice to see some familiar faces, as well as some new ones. Looking forward to this one on Monday.

Eli Keszler & Ashley Paul
$5-$10 Donation
Metropolis Underground
615 S. Main St (backside of bldg, first door on your left)
N. Syracuse, NY 13212

Eli Keszler, using drums, along with crotales, bells, bowed metal, strings, Eli creates a unique whirlwind of sound that balances sparse droning harmonics with intense, fast, free rhythms. He has performed, recorded or collaborated with artists such as Jandek, Phill Niblock (performed a new work of his for bowed crotales and saxophone), Roscoe Mitchell, Loren Connors, Charles Cohen, Anthony Coleman (appearing on his New World Records Release), Aki Onda, Bryan Eubanks, David Linton, Steve Pyne (Redhorse), Greg Kelley, Ashley Paul. Eli has performed at venues like The Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston), Irving Plaza, Merkin Hall, Issue Project Room, The Stone and The Knitting Factory (NYC and LA), and countless bookstores, basements, and small galleries around the US and Europe. He has released solo CD’s and cassettes on REL as well as labels such as Rare Youth (debut solo LP, Livingston), Reverb Worship and Something on The Road.
Ashley Paul plays reeds, unique string instruments, electronics and sings. Her dream-like music juxtaposes aggressive, sustained high pitched blasts, floating vocals, clattering strings and bells, cry- like saxophones and is somehow tied together by oddly melodic songs. In the past year she performed with Loren connors, Aki Onda, Joe Morris, and Greg Kelley, premiered a new work by Phill Niblock for soprano saxophone and bowed crotales (written for her and Eli Keszler), performed as part of the US premiere of Mauricio Kagel’s masterpiece ‘Der Schall’ at Merkin Concert Hall in New York and was heard in a live feature on wzbc’s Rare Frequency. Additionally, Ashley performs regularly with Anthony Coleman in duo, trio and on his recent New World Records release, plays duo with Eli Keszler and has recently begun performing solo, sharing the stage with Thurston Moore, Mats Gustaffson, Chris Corsano and others.

Sorry to everyone that missed the Stone Baby / Torus show. It was great. But if you can make it out to one gig this summer, please make it to this one, you will not be disappointed.

Mary Halvorson & Jessica Pavone have collectively been featured in The New York Times, Jazz Review, The Wire, Time Out New York, Time Out Chicago, The New York Press, Jazztimes, All About Jazz, BBC and Downbeat. From the collaborative minds and nimble fingers of Mary Halvorson (Guitar, Vocals) and Jessica Pavone (Viola, Vocals) come a minimalist rendering of emotions and themes, performed with stark clarity and introspection. Touring in support of their new Thirsty Ear CD Thin Air: “Thin Air” is a presentation involving their vast talents as musicians, vocalists and poets. Their lyrics borrow from themes relating to everything from human relationships and travelling to more abstract and intangible elements. These melodies are offered in a sparse yet effervescent style that make the listener feel as though they are sitting right next to them, much like an impromptu coffeehouse performance. Both intimate and forward thinking, this release is a true example of the power of thought, through a unique blending of avant folk with jazz underpinnings.

August 1st @ 8 pm
$5-$10 Donation

The Human will also be performing with his new electro-pop-twang outfit as well as Words For Snow.

Hello all,

We have two shows this weekend, and hope to see you out to at least one of the them. Support live music, and SPREAD THE WORD!

Michael

July 24th @ 8pm
Andrew Lamb Solo
$5-$10 Donation
Metropolis Underground
615 S. Main St (backside of bldg, first door on your left)
N. Syracuse, NY 13212

Andrew Lamb (Saxophones, Flutes, Woodwinds) Born in Ingold, North Carolina and grew up in Chicago and predominately in South Jamaica, Queens. Having studied with AACM charter member Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Lamb came into New York’s “avant – garde’ community during the 1970’s at the height of New York’s legendary ‘Loft Jazz scene”, and as time progressed, was to become an active presence in the vibrant Bedford – Stuyvesant arts world at that time, becoming the recipient of several consecutive, and highly competitive Brooklyn Arts Council grant awards.
Andrew Lamb and his ensembles remain a regular presence both domestically and internationally, frequently playing the annual Vision Festival (New York City) which began in 1996. Andrew Lamb has also taken part in the Composer’s Workshop Ensemble, Alan Silva Sound Vision Orchestra, Cecil Taylor Vision Orchestra, Roy Campbell Ensemble, and several other big band projects. Lamb is also the member of an exciting trio collaboration with AACM affiliated drummer Alvin Fielder and pianist Chris Parker known as M41 which also has a highly regarded recording entitled M41. In ’04, The Henry Grimes Trio with Andrew Lamb and Newman Baker, was named “Best Jazz Trio” by NY Press in it’s “Best Of Manhattan” issue. That trio also played in Berlin, Germany Edgefest (Ann Arbor, Michigan) and The Hothouse, Chicago in ’05.
Andrew Lamb’s music rises out of the African – American church, blues, and jazz traditions, and is deeply spiritual, profoundly emotional, and easily accessible to all who hear him, wrote Steven Loewy for “All Music Guide” Andrew Lamb is a serious musician seeking to uplift his soul through art, and like John Coltrane and his progeny, Lamb’s vehicle is the psalm-like expression of his tenor saxophone. The results reflect his quest, testifying to his musical abilities, enormous potential, and depth of character”
In the year 1994, lamb was signed to a recording contract by Chicago’s famed Delmark record company to make his first recording as a leader, “Portrait In the Mist” which reached critical acclaim being listed among the best albums of the year in the Jazz Times 1995 critics poll, while bringing light to Lamb’s compositional prowess, and featuring Percussionist/vibraphonist Warren Smith, bassist Wilber Morris and drummer/percussionist Andrei Strobert. Andrew Lamb has since recorded in both duo and trio settings.
Andrew will be performing solo as well as a set with Michael Hentz & Mike ((P))

July 26th @ 7pm
Henry Gale, Stone Baby, Torus
$5-$10 Donation
Metropolis Underground
615 S. Main St (backside of bldg, first door on your left)
N. Syracuse, NY 13212

"We’re suckers for a good Lost reference, so when we stumbled across a band named Henry Gale while skipping through the fields of MySpace, we approached their music with the same cautious optimism any Lost fan accords another on first meeting. It paid off: these guys are good. Like many post-rock bands, Henry Gale (an instrumental four-piece specializing in post-rocky bombast à la Explosions in the Sky or our own Common Cold) just love guitars that veer between twinkling loopage and soaring textures. Unlike many post-rock bands, they don’t take forever getting to the part that rocks, they do it from the get-go." - Michael Brodeur, The Boston Phoenix
"Really good spacerock but akin to American Analog Set instead of Gsybe! More happy and summery than whispy, windsweaped." - The Reverend, Return to the Pit
"For obvious reasons, the post-rock section of my music library isn’t one that I often break out when having a few drinks with friends. Henry Gale’s debut 5 track EP Other Voices is an album that seems to do its damndest to break that mold — almost reaching through the confines of my headphones to mingle throughout the room and meet new people." - Bradley, Sound As Language
"Henry Gale's first effort leaves you with a slightly loop feeling, an ethereal sort of contentedness that could develop into the band's signature sound." - Dan Weber, Performer Magazine
"The music seems much more uplifting and hopeful than the typical post-rock shoegaze. This is quite a refreshing change of pace from the heavier, angst-ridden bombast of a lot of bands that do this kind of music. Listening to these five songs made my ears smile today." - Joel Simches, The Noise
